It all started yesterday…

Doesn’t it always? Anything worth repeating almost always happened yesterday.

My brother and his wife were leaving for a trip to some high-dollar horse ranch in BFE, which left me charged with the feeding chores in their absence. No sooner than I get halfway to the chicken feed, old Crockpot comes at me.

Crockpot is one of the OG roosters around here, and he knows it.

Now, mind you, I have been here for a few months and him and I have been on good terms until a week or so ago, when he spurred me in the back of my leg. I’ve tried to keep my eye on his whereabouts since, and try not to have my back to him if I can help it, but yesterday morning, he was no where to be seen…only felt. When I spun around, he fluffed up his neck feathers and came at me again. He managed to get me muddy AND put a hole through both my shirt and my britches! I kicked at him and he gave us some distance, but while I was opening the door to get to the feed, he got me in the back of my leg again.

Yesterday evening, he let me be….

I might wanna interject that the chickens don’t regularly get fed in the mornings. The goats, cats, pigs and the dairy cow (Kitty-Moo) are usually the morning feed. Chickens, ducks, goats, pigs and Kitty-Moo are the evening feed. The indoor dogs get fed at noon, and the outside working dogs get fed sometimes three times a day, because we all give them food when they come around.

So, I thought, maybe old Crockpot was mad because I was feeding them in the morning, when they weren’t meant to be fed, but then, well…that don’t make no sense. Animals want food-always.

This morning, as I made my way to the goat pen, he got me again, and when I turned around and kicked at him, my shoe flew off my foot. It didn’t hit him either. I said a lot of bad words and threatened to make a pot of chicken and dumplings, as I stood there with my shoeless foot raised, BECAUSE THE GROUND IS MUDDY! I swear he was laughing…I had no choice but to put my foot down in order to get to my shoe. Grrr! Roosters are the devil.
